Applying the file
- Stop the server. It rewrites server.properties when it shuts down, so changes made while it runs can be lost.
- Replace
server.propertiesin the server's main folder with the downloaded one, or paste over the lines you changed. - Start the server again.
Settings you leave out keep their default; the server adds any missing ones the next time it starts.
Kiphost manages server-port and server-ip for you, and keeps online-mode=true so accounts stay safe. The rest can be changed in Files or Settings on your dashboard.
Settings that affect lag
view-distance and simulation-distance matter most. View distance is how many chunks the server sends to each player; simulation distance is how far away mobs move and crops grow. On a small shared server, 8 view and 6 simulation are a good balance. The lag guide goes into more detail.
Settings people get wrong
level-seedonly applies when the world is first made. Changing it later does nothing until you delete the world folder.white-list=truewith nobody added locks everyone out, you included. Add yourself withwhitelist addfirst.online-mode=falselets anyone join with any name, including yours. Leave it on unless you run a proxy like Velocity.spawn-protectionstops non-operators building near spawn. Set it to 0 if friends can't break blocks there.
