How to join a Minecraft server

Joining a server takes an address and a matching game version. This guide covers both, plus what the usual error messages mean. It's written for Minecraft: Java Edition, which is the edition Kiphost servers run.

Add the server to your list

  1. Start Minecraft: Java Edition from the launcher and choose Multiplayer on the title screen. The first time, the game shows a warning about online play. Choose Proceed.
  2. Choose Add Server.
  3. Type anything you like into Server Name. It's only a label for your list.
  4. Type the address into Server Address, for example friday.kiphost.top. Don't add http:// or a port number.
  5. Choose Done. The server appears in your list with its message of the day and player count.
  6. Select it and choose Join Server, or double-click it.

If you only want to join once, Direct Connection does the same thing without saving the server to your list.

Waking a napping server

Kiphost servers shut down after 5 minutes with nobody online, which is how they stay free. A napping server still shows in your list with a message saying it's asleep.

Join it anyway. The first join wakes it, and the game disconnects you with a message that the server is starting. Wait about 30 seconds, choose Back to server list, and join again. Once one person is in, everyone else joins straight away.

Use the right version

Your game and the server have to run the same version of Minecraft. If they don't, you'll see Outdated client (your game is older) or Outdated server (your game is newer).

New Kiphost servers run the latest release. To play an older version, the owner can change it in the server's Settings tab. To change your own game version:

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
  2. Choose New installation, then pick the version from the Version list.
  3. Save it, choose Play next to the new installation, and join again.

Outdated client or Outdated serverYour game version doesn't match the server. See the section above.

If the server shows Expired on its owner's dashboard, it's run out of time and can't be woken. The owner needs to make a new one.
