Questions people ask
The short answers. If yours isn't here, the guides go into more detail, or you can get in touch.
The basics
Is it really free?
Yes. There's no paid plan and no card to enter. Kiphost is paid for by the ads on this site and the short ads you can choose to watch to give your server more time.
What do I need to play?
Minecraft: Java Edition on a computer and a Discord account to log in. Bedrock Edition (phones, consoles, the Microsoft Store version) can't join. See Java or Bedrock.
How many servers can I have?
One at a time. Delete it from the dashboard if you want to start a different one.
How powerful is the server?
3 GB of memory and 8 GB of storage. That's comfortable for a group of friends with a few plugins. There's no limit on CPU; servers share the machine's processors and use what they need.
Which Minecraft version does it run?
The latest release of Paper by default. You can pick another version in your server's Settings tab.
Time and ads
How long does my server last?
A new server gets 30 minutes. Each ad you watch from the dashboard adds 6 hours. You can watch one ad an hour, and a server can hold up to 30 hours at once.
Does the time count down while the server is napping?
Yes. Time is a deadline, not a meter: it runs down whether the server is on or asleep. Napping is about saving the machine's memory, not your hours.
Why one ad an hour?
It keeps things fair. Without a limit, a few people could keep servers alive forever by watching ads back to back, and there'd be less room for everyone else.
Why can't I add more than 30 hours?
Every server holds a spot on a machine. Capping how far ahead you can top up means servers nobody comes back to free their spot within about a day.
What happens when time runs out?
The server stops and can't be started or topped up again. Its files are kept for 7 days so you can download your world from the Files tab, then it's deleted for good. You can make a new server straight away.
The ad didn't add any time. What happened?
Time is only added when the ad network confirms you watched the whole ad. If you closed it early, or an ad blocker stopped it, nothing is added and you can try again. If you're sure you finished it, contact us.
Napping and waking
Why does my server nap?
Most servers sit empty most of the day. When nobody's been online for 5 minutes, Kiphost saves the world and shuts the server down so its memory can go to someone who's playing. That's the main reason it can be free.
How do I wake it up?
Join it from Minecraft, or choose Start on the dashboard. The first join wakes it and disconnects you with a message. Wait about 30 seconds and join again.
Does napping lose anything?
No. The world is saved before the server shuts down, exactly as if you'd stopped it yourself. Farms and crops don't grow while it's asleep, the same as chunks nobody is near.
What is the queue?
If every machine is full when you make a server, you wait in line for a spot. Keep the dashboard open while you wait; spots are only held for people who are still there.
Running your server
Can I install plugins?
Yes. Upload Paper, Spigot or Bukkit plugins to the plugins folder from the Files tab and restart. See How to install plugins.
Can I install mods or modpacks?
Not at the moment. Kiphost servers run Paper, which uses plugins. Most modpacks also need more than 3 GB of memory.
Can I use my own world?
Yes. Upload it as a zip from the Files tab and extract it. See Upload your own world.
Can I change my server's address?
No. The address is set when you make the server so your friends' saved server lists keep working. To use a different one, make a new server.
Can I use my own domain?
Not yet. Every server gets an address ending in our domain.
How do I keep strangers out?
Turn on the whitelist. See Invite friends and keep strangers out.
Your account
Why do I log in with Discord?
Almost every Minecraft player already has an account, so there's no new password to remember. It also makes it much harder for one person to make hundreds of free servers. We only ask Discord for your username and email.
How do I delete my account?
Delete your server from the dashboard, then contact us from the email on your Discord account and we'll remove the rest. See the privacy policy for what we keep.
My server was removed. Why?
Servers that break the terms, for example by attacking other servers or mining cryptocurrency, are removed without notice. If you think it was a mistake, contact us.
