Java or Bedrock: which servers can you join?

Minecraft comes in two editions that look alike but can't play together on their own. Which one you have decides which servers you can join, so it's worth checking before you invite friends.

Updated 25 October 2026

Which edition do you have?

EditionWhere it runs
Java EditionPC, Mac and Linux, started from the Minecraft Launcher. The title screen says "Minecraft: Java Edition".
Bedrock EditionPhones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and the Windows version from the Microsoft Store. The title screen just says "Minecraft".

If you bought Minecraft on a PC since 2022, you own both. Look for Minecraft: Java Edition in the launcher.

How they differ on servers

  • Java players join servers by typing an address. Bedrock players can do the same on phones and Windows, but consoles only let you join a few featured servers without workarounds.
  • Java servers run plugins (Paper) or mods (Fabric, Forge). Bedrock has its own add-on system.
  • Redstone, combat and some farms behave differently, so a build from one edition may not work in the other.

Kiphost servers are Java only

Kiphost runs Paper, a Java Edition server. Everyone who joins needs Minecraft: Java Edition on the same version as the server.

Some servers let Bedrock players in with the Geyser plugin, which translates between the two. Geyser needs its own network port, which Kiphost servers don't have, so it won't work here.
